  • This Sharx camera is virtually identical to the Panasonic Wireless Network Camera and Pet Cam (BL-C20A). The Panasonic camera is less expensive and Panasonic offers free web hosting.

I’ve had a lot of trouble with this camera and the poor wireless range. I find that I cannot install it with a wall between the router and the camera. The camera connects sporadically. Even sitting on a table just 10′ from the router, the camera will run for a while, then it will just lose the connection and then come back after 15 minutes or so. Laptops have no problem maintaining the connection with one or more walls between them and the same router.

The image quality is fairly good and it should be easy for someone technically adroit to install the device.

I couldn’t get motion detection alarms to work. When I click on the option to set the motion detection area, the screen is blank and devoid of controls. I’ve tried it in IE and FireFox. Nothing. I couldn’t find any firmware updates on Sharx’s website. In fact there really isn’t much there of help.

Panasonic markets the twin as a pet camera. That’s probably a good use for the Sharx as well. Not recommended for a location where you can’t physically pull the plug and restart it.

  • The product itself is quite robust in the features that it offers. It comes with PC software (to bad for us Mac users) and a manual, if you could call it that without laughing. The physical installation was simple and the built-in server works very well. Unfortunately, the configuration of the wireless can be a headache for the non-techie. I consider myself and ubberteckie and I was baffled by the many times I had jump back and forth in the manual; from the beginning to the appendix… back and forth. Whoever wrote that manual was basically spewing all their random thoughts on paper and never bothered to look back. I hate to rate the product so low because of how well it functions. But I felt I had to warn those using the wireless features connectivity. The wireless transmitter is also very week.

  • Looks and sounds great but couldn’t get it set up on my own. Frustrating.

  • Do not buy this camera. It has a very poor wireless range. I have several other wireless devices (IP cameras, Laptop, PDA) and they all work fine. This camera is located 15′ from my router without any walls in between and it connects sporadically and just loses its connection for no reason. My other wireless devices are located in other rooms and they all work fine. I contacted them to get a RMA number and after five days I got an email saying that they will send me a shipping box to return my unit, however that was four weeks ago and I have not received anything from them and they do not even answer my emails any more. You will be wasting your money buying this product.

  • I bought this camera last year and had to spend an hour and a half on the phone with customer support in order to get the thing set up. At the time they blamed the router I was using…apparently that particular darned router causes lots of problems. Fast forward a few months. I’m setting the camera up in a new house with a completely different kind of router. Wouldn’t you know, it’s impossible again…and once again customer support blames the router.

There’s no way to call customer support. You have to email them and wait for them to email you back. Then, after several dozen emails, where it’s clear they’re not paying attention to what you’ve told them (they keep suggesting this or that may be the problem although you’ve explained ad nauseum that this or that is NOT the problem) they’ll offer to set up a telephone appointment. Then you have to sit and wait for them to call you. They’re nice and helpful during the long, long telephone call that finally gets the thing working, but really, do you want to spend this much time setting something up?
